The Scoop on maxine, Resume Length: How Many Pages Should Your Resume Be? by Katharine Hansen, Ph.D. Once upon a time, someone came up with a “rule” that resumes should not exceed one page. No one really knows who came up with the rule, but a great many job-seekers still seem to live in fear of moe net worth, this supposed edict. The fact is that very few “rules” exist today in the world of resume writing. Unbreakable rules include: You can’t lie, you can’t have typos/misspellings, and you can’t include negative information. Just about every other rule you’ve ever heard about maxine resumes, however, is breakable, including rules about how many pages your resume should comprise. Rules are one thing, but trends are another. After a period that could almost be described as “anything goes” in terms of resume length, the pendulum in porter's 5 forces reference this Twitter-inspired, short-attention-span age has swung back toward shorter resumes. “The norm for most resumes/CVs is one to two pages, even for very experienced professionals,” says the Findings of maxine, 2011 Global Career Brainstorming Day: Trends for the Now, the New the Next in Careers , published by the Career Thought Leaders Consortium. The publication went on between humans, to note that a survey of HR/recruiters on LinkedIn indicated an overwhelming preference for a second page.
Even against within this climate of shorter resumes, each individual situation dictates resume length. After surveying career experts, we developed some guidelines to help you determine the right length for your resume. It should be noted that length is primarily an maxine zazzara, issue that pertains to the traditional, formatted, “print” version of gatsby social, your resume. For resumes in electronic formats that are intended to be placed directly in keyword-searchable databases, page-length is immaterial. “The length of your resume doesn’t matter to an applicant tracking system,” affirms Jon Ciampi, CEO of Preptel, a company that aims to help job-seekers penetrate these systems (as quoted in zazzara an article on of Obesity Essay, CIO.com by Meridith Levinson). “It will scan your resume regardless of maxine, whether it’s two pages or four. The Great Social Class! Submitting a longer (say three or four page) resume that allows you to pack in more relevant experience and maxine, keywords and phrases could increase your chances of ranking higher in the system,” Ciampi says in Levinson’s article. Thus, this article’s guidelines apply either in situations where your formatted resume is screened by human eyes without having been placed into a keyword-searchable database or after a keyword search has narrowed the field of applicants. Resumes for new grads and porter's, entry-level job-seekers are often, but not always, one page.
Most college career-placement centers tell students to limit their resumes to one page, notes resume writer Sharon Pierce-Williams, 75 percent of whose business is writing for the college population. Pierce-Williams observes that many career offices even require that students stick to a one-page resume.” Indeed, if there is zazzara, one group that should strive for a one-page resume, it is college students and new graduates. In many cases, these entry-level job-seekers don’t have enough relevant experience to justify more than a page. Some new grads do, however, have lots of relevant internship, summer-job, extracurricular, leadership, and humans and neanderthals, sports experience that justifies a two-page resume. Pierce-Williams takes an unusual approach to maxine zazzara, new-grad resumes. Becoming! “I have compelling proof that two-page resumes land job interviews for college students,” Pierce-Williams says. Zazzara! “Length depends on extra-curricular involvement and leadership.
It takes a certain ‘go-getter’-type student for a two-page resume.” Pierce-Williams designs college-student resumes in which page one “often looks like a ‘regular’ resume, but page two is reference, entitled ‘Key Leadership and Project Management’ or simply ‘Key Leadership.'” Pierce-Williams says she uses this page-two section to list three to four projects in which the student made a difference in an association or sorority/fraternity. If you fall into the college-student/entry-level/new-grad group and are tempted to maxine zazzara, go to two pages, just be sure that you have the relevant material to justify a second page. “Once someone has been in business for 10 years, particularly if they have switched jobs, I find it difficult to keep it on one page,” says coach, speaker, and trainer Darlene Nason. “I think a two-page resume is 5 forces reference, a good average.” In his Resume Critique Writer software, Grant Cooper of Strategic Resumes offers this view of the two-page resume: “The resume has now taken the place of the initial interview, and only those with significant qualifications and strong resumes are even invited to interview. True, it does take an additional minute or less for an HR professional to review the second page of a resume, but that extra minute is seen as far more helpful than scheduling a questionable candidate for a personal interview.” Supplemental sheets and addenda provide a way to present additional information without adding to the length of the resume itself. Executives in particular were advised till recently that three- and maxine zazzara, four-page resumes were acceptable and even expected. Moe Net Worth! Now, though, the trend is toward two-page or even one-page resumes for zazzara, executives that are supplemented by various addenda that can optionally be submitted with the resume. “A suite of addenda,” says Deborah Wile Dib, president of Executive Power Brand, can be “a strategic way to mention presentations, awards, published works, technical skills, extensive education, and expanded success studies.” Dib, who particularly uses addenda with executives, notes that “such addenda allow for even greater depth without cluttering the resume.”
Creating various supplements and a diplomat, addenda enables the job-seeker to maxine zazzara, choose which pieces to send along with the resume. He or she might instead choose not to send any addenda but to social, bring them to maxine zazzara, the interview. Even among employers, there’s no consensus on 5 forces reference, preferred resume length. While there is no consensus among employers and maxine zazzara, recruiters about resume length, some feel one page is too short. Maureen Crawford Hentz, manager of talent acquisition, development and compliance at Osram Sylvania, Boston MA, particularly disdains “abbreviated or ‘teaser’ resumes” that urge the recruiter, “for more information, call me.” Many recruiters believe that two pages is about the right length; for moe net worth, some, three pages is the outside limit that they will read. “If the resume is longer than two pages, it needs to be well worth it,” noted Hentz’s colleague at Osram Sylvania, Harlynn Goolsby. Others question executives’ ability to prioritize if their resumes are longer than two pages. Since recruiters pass candidate resumes on zazzara, to client employers, they must also consider employer preferences. “Most of my clients profess that they are too busy to read anything lengthier — thus, I deliver what they require,” said Chris Dutton, director at Intelligent Recruitment Services and Owner, Intelligent IT Recruitment, Manchester, UK. Recruiter opinions about resume length have been colored in recent years by the growing practice of reading resumes on a computer screen rather than printing them.
Resumes that might seem too long in print are acceptable on screen. For many decision-makers, page length is less important than providing sufficient details. “I … encounter quite a few resumes that have been stripped of any detail in order to confine them to one or two pages,” said Pam Sisson, a recruiter for Professional Personnel in Alabama. “My immediate response is to ask for a more detailed resume. A resume that’s three or four pages but actually shows the qualifications and experience necessary for a position is much preferred, in of Obesity examples my opinion, to one that has cut out all the substance to meet some passe idea of a one-page resume.” John Kennedy, senior IT recruiter at Belcan agreed: “Resume length is of very little importance so long as the information is accurate, verifiable, and zazzara, pertinent to the position. Porter's Reference! If a candidate has 20 years of experience directly relating to the position being applied for maxine zazzara, and that experience is verifiable, it should be listed even if the resume goes four-plus pages.” Given that employers screen resumes for as few as 6 seconds, a resume must quickly capture the reader’s interest. “As long as the resume grabs the the great social class attention of the hiring manager, it is the right length,” says McCown-Guard. “Whatever the length of the resume, the maxine zazzara critical factor is to becoming a diplomat, make absolutely certain that your reader’s interest is maxine, piqued within the first half of the first page,” cautions Laurie J. Smith, president of Creative Keystrokes Executive Resume Service. “Of equal or greater importance [to length] is concise writing, short paragraphs, brief lists of bullet points, and good organizational strategies that ensure the resume can be quickly skimmed,” notes the Findings of 2011 Global Career Brainstorming Day: Trends for the Now, the New the Next in Careers . “In addition, it is essential to use strong merchandising and positioning strategies to bring the most relevant information to the forefront.
Creating a strong impact “above the fold” — on the top half of the first page of the resume — has become increasingly critical for moe net worth, job seekers in maxine one of the most competitive employment markets we’ve ever experienced.” Whatever page your resume ends on, text should fill at least a third to a half of the page. If the last page of between, your resume amounts to just a few lines of text, it’s best to condense so that the preceding page becomes the last page of your resume. Conversely, don’t add superfluous text just to fill up the last page of maxine, your resume. “I never fluff up content for the sake of filling space,” says Teena Rose of Resume to Referral. Moe Net Worth! “Irrelevancies can dilute the overall effectiveness of the resume.” The end of your resume, Rose notes, “should offer additional value and not be perceived as leftovers.” Don’t sacrifice your resume’s readability to make it conform to maxine, arbitrary “rules” about resume length. It’s always pitiful when we have to whip out the becoming magnifying class to read the zazzara tiny 8- or 9-point type on the resume of a job-seeker who has gone to absurd lengths to limit his or her resume to a certain number of pages. Don’t forego readable type (we suggest no smaller than 10.5 point; 11 to 11.5 is better), comfortable margins (some resume writers say 1 inch all around; we’ve gone as small as .7?), space between lines, white space, and a pleasing, eye-attracting layout just to cram your resume onto X number of reference, pages. “It’s less taxing and time-consuming to read one and a half or two well-formatted pages than one page where everything’s squished together,” observes one expert.
“Those resumes that do contain detailed information, but are literally ‘crammed’ into one page, are now frowned upon,” says Cooper in his Resume Critique Writer software. “It is simply too difficult for a hiring director to read the tiny print and jam-packed information squeezed into a one-page stuffed resume. Maxine Zazzara! Companies that once insisted on difference humans and neanderthals, one-page resumes are perfectly happy with a clearly-written, concise, and maxine, well-formatted two-page resume that is easy to read, yet has the detailed information they now need.” Page numbers, headers, and footers can aid continuity in moe net worth a resume that is two or more pages. All resume pages beyond page one need to be numbered. Some job-seekers choose a “page 2 of 3” model. Maxine Zazzara! “If you decide to go with two or more pages, be sure to include your name and between humans, appropriate page number at the top,” suggests Ann Baehr of Best Resumes. “And organize all of the information with distinct categories to maxine, make it easier for difference between and neanderthals, the reader to find what they are looking for at a glance.” Including your name close to maxine, the page number is highly desirable in case resume pages get separated from each other. However, repeating your entire “letterhead” from the difference and neanderthals first page of maxine, your resume on subsequent pages can be confusing and take up too much space.
Career-management coach Don Orlando takes a novel approach to difference humans and neanderthals, a footer designed to entice the employer to zazzara, keep reading the resume: “At the bottom of my multi-page resumes, there is the great gatsby, a [customized] footer that reads something like this: ‘More indicators of performance General Motors can use now…'” It’s OK for a resume section, such as your experience, to straddle two pages of your resume, but avoid splitting the description of a given job over two pages. Zazzara! Finish describing a job on one page, and begin detailing the next-oldest job on the following page. Final Thoughts on Job-Seeker Resume Length. One more guideline to consider is that one-page resumes are typically expected for networking and at job fairs. If you’re still torn about how long to make your resume, consider contacting a qualified resume writer for an expert consultation. Essay: English language teachers’ perceptions of an activity to elicit beliefs. In this small-scale study six English teachers working at a Turkish private middle school elicited their own teacher beliefs using an adapted version of a repertory grid as proposed by Donaghue (2003). The repertory grid was introduced and used in a session in which the participants individually generated their constructs and compared them with another teacher. The participants were asked to write an evaluation of the activity as an instrument to elicit beliefs. Furthermore a semi-structured interview was conducted which aimed to zazzara detect the participant’s perceptions of the activity and to difference between humans and neanderthals shed further light on the value of this instrument.
Conclusions about the applicability of the maxine repertory grid technique and, in particular, the instrument used in this study in second language teacher education and the great gatsby, teacher development are drawn. Key words: Teacher beliefs, ELT, Elicitation Technique, Teacher Education, Professional Development. It is widely accepted that people’s beliefs have an impact on their behaviour. Thought and action are interactively related: ‘What people think, believe, and feel affects how they behave’ (Bandura, 1986, p. 25). Reviewing the relevant literature, Gabillon (2012) has recently explicated the of nature foreign language teacher beliefs and their influence on teaching practice in a set of five dichotomies: (1) teacher beliefs are personal as they represent an individual understanding and interpretation of teaching practice and social, as the maxine zazzara understanding and The Terror of Obesity examples, interpretation is shaped in a social and cultural context; (2) teacher beliefs are practical and theoretical in a way that theoretical knowledge (e.g. Maxine Zazzara. teaching methods or learning theories) is interpreted and moe net worth, modified in maxine the light of practical knowledge (i.e. experienced knowledge) to moe net worth fit it to teacher beliefs; (3) there are teacher beliefs that are implicit, i.e. unconscious and maxine zazzara, difficult to verbalise, and those ones being explicit, i.e. teachers are able to verbalize them, to provide a rationale and to relate them to moe net worth previous experience (professional or life experience); (4) teacher beliefs are dynamic, i.e. open to change; however, it is maxine, uncontested that teacher beliefs are not easily changed and deep-rooted key beliefs or core beliefs might be resistant; (5) teacher beliefs are systematic, i.e. there are belief factors that are organised around themes rather systematically so that practice is linked to the belief system, while other belief factors are complex organised and The Terror examples, indeed contain conflicting perceptions which cause a mismatch between beliefs and practice. Borg (2006; 2003) has coined the term teacher cognition referring to maxine the ‘unobservable cognitive dimension of teaching ‘ what teachers know, believe and in The Time Essay, think’ (ibid, p. 81). As such, teacher cognition plays an essential role in the practice of teaching and teacher education. Zazzara. It is shaped by in The and The Time Traveler schooling (the teacher’s experience gained when she was a pupil/student) and professional coursework (the teacher’s experience gained in teacher education programs). Furthermore, teacher cognition is in dependence to contextual factors (physical conditions, material, curriculum etc. Zazzara. faced in the institutional context the teacher is employed in), and own classroom practice (which shapes cognition unconsciously, or consciously through reflection). Teacher cognition stands in a diplomat an interactional relation to teacher learning and practice as it both informs them and is informed through them.
It is important to uncover teachers’ beliefs in order to initiate reflection on maxine own teaching and, consequently, to facilitate professional development. 5 Forces. When teacher beliefs remain undetected or are ignored, teacher training and maxine zazzara, professional development programs are likely to of Obesity examples be ineffective because input (e.g. new approaches or techniques) cannot be connected to existing teacher beliefs; consequently, new content is zazzara, unlikely to be transferred into classroom practice (Freeman, 2002; V??lez-Rend??n, 2002). Uncovering beliefs and porter's, assumptions is, however, difficult since they might be subconscious or it might be challenging to articulate them (Donaghue, 2003). Furthermore teacher beliefs might consist of espoused theories which are in contrast to zazzara theories in action (Williams Burden, 1997). Among other instruments, the use of belief inventories (e.g. Richards Lockhart, 1996, pp. 48-51) or awareness raising activities (e.g. Taggart Wilson, 2005; Roberts, 1998; Wallace, 1991) have been suggested to 5 forces reference explore teacher beliefs. Maxine. Donaghue (2003) has introduced an adapted version of the the great gatsby repertory grid technique to elicit teacher beliefs and assumptions (see Appendix A).
Instead of using given constructs (as in questionnaires), in zazzara repertory grids participants develop and articulate their own, personal constructs. The instrument developed by Donaghue is difference between humans and neanderthals, loosely based on Kelly’s (1991) theory of personal construct, according to maxine zazzara which an individual makes sense of the world by generating constructs which shape an individual’s personal theory. Constructs are viewed as ‘dichotomous abstractions’ (ibid., p. 75), i.e. individuals perceive elements of their experience in such a way that they ‘never affirm anything without simultaneously denying something’ (Fransella, Bell Bannister, 2004, p.7). For example, an effective teacher might be considered as someone who motivates students, while an ineffective teacher might be considered to Obstacles in The Outsiders and The Essay be teaching without motivating students (example taken from zazzara Roberts, 1998, p. 31). The Great Gatsby Social. Accordingly, in the repertory grid activity proposed by Donaghue (2003) the participants are asked to compare three different people and to affirm a construct in which two persons are alike, and maxine zazzara, the third is class, different.
The adapted version of the repertory grid was developed as an instrument to be used as an awareness-raising activity at maxine zazzara the beginning of courses in teacher training or professional development. It aims at informing participants about their (often covert) beliefs and assumptions about porter's reference language teaching. Differently from other repertory grids it does not contain a scale through which participants indicate how near a construct is related to maxine an element. For this reason, conclusion from results of the instrument must be drawn with caution. It is rather ‘a catalyst to thought and reflection’ (Donaghue, 2003, p. 350) than a research tool to gain generalisable results. Consequently, this study is a diplomat, concerned with the applicability of the instruments and not with the gained beliefs themselves.
The study sought to find out how the adapted repertory grid by Donaghue (2003) was perceived as an instrument to maxine elicit teacher beliefs by six teachers at a Turkish middle school. For this reason, the participants were asked to evaluate the instrument and it was intended to find out to what dimensions of teacher cognition the participants related their own beliefs to. It was assumed that the participants’ comments might be understood as an indicator for porter's 5 forces reference, evaluating in maxine zazzara how far the instrument is capable of initiating reflective thinking. No less importantly, the participants’ perceptions might contribute to developing the instrument. Following these considerations the study sought to answer the following questions: 1. Moe Net Worth. How do the maxine zazzara participants evaluate the elicitation technique used in this study? 2. How do the The Terror of Obesity examples participants perceive the elicitation technique for their professional development? The participants in maxine zazzara this study were six teachers at a private middle school in a southeastern city in Turkey. The pupils attending the school come from families belonging to the great social the middle and upper middle class. In order to get some background information, the participants were asked to fill in repertory grid evaluation form (Appendix B), which requested besides an evaluation of the activity some biographical information.
Background of the Participants in zazzara the Study. Participant Sex Age Qualification Teaching experience. 1 female 33 bachelor 11 years. 2 male 45 bachelor 17 years. 3 female 27 bachelor 4 years. 4 female 29 bachelor 7 years.
5 female 29 bachelor 4 years. 6 male 32 bachelor 6 years. Table 1 shows that all participants have a bachelor’s degree in ELT and vary in Obstacles and The Time Essay teaching experience as evidenced by the years of teaching. Zazzara. Participants 1, 3 and difference between humans, 5 have had exclusively worked at private schools while participant 4 had worked at a private teaching institution (dershane) for five years and participant 6 at zazzara a public school for three years before they started their current job at the private school. Participant 2 is of Syrian nationality. Difference Between Humans. He had worked at state schools abroad (e.g. Maxine Zazzara. Kuwait), and has been working at the private school for two years.
Data Collection Procedures and Tools. The participants were invited to a session in which the activity was carried out. The activity procedure followed these steps (cf. Donaghue, 2003, p. The Great Gatsby. 347f.): 1. The researcher introduces the aim of the maxine zazzara study and explains all steps. He also introduces the repertory grid activity and explains the concept of moe net worth, personal constructs. 2. Participants are divided into pairs. Each pair receives one set of zazzara, cards containing the elements of the grid (cf.
Appendix A). They think of a real person that matches the element best. Participant A writes the name of the person at the top of the card, participant B writes it at the bottom. For confidentiality, the participants are allowed to write a pseudonym if the partner knows the person. An example is given in Figure 1. A teacher you learned well with. Figure 1. Card used in repertory grid activity (sample) 3. Cards are shuffled. Each participant is given a grid (Appendix A). Pairs choose three cards at random, and individually think how two persons are similar and one is different writing their personal constructs in between humans and neanderthals the ‘construct’ column. Participants put a tick to the elements that are the same and a cross to the one that is different.
4. Pairs compare their constructs and discuss. 5. Maxine Zazzara. Pairs return the cards, shuffle them and becoming a diplomat, repeat steps 3 and 4 (Donaghue, 2003, suggests 6 turns). Repertory Grid Evaluation. At the end of the maxine zazzara session, the participants were asked to evaluate the repertory grid by completing the Repertory Grid Evaluation Form (see Appendix B). Each participant was interviewed separately. The aim of the semi-structured interview was to find out if the repertory grid activity had initiated a reflective process in each of the moe net worth participants.
For this purpose, the participants were invited to zazzara comment on their beliefs (see questions in Appendix C). The interviews were hold in English and audio-recorded. The interviews were then transcribed to becoming a diplomat prepare them for zazzara, the data analysis. During the The Terror of Obesity examples repertory grid activity the researcher took field notes in order to document how the participants responded to the activity. Four types of data were collected during the study: the repertory grids, the field notes, the zazzara repertory grid evaluation and the transcription of the semi-structured interview. The repertory grids were not analysed in order to detect the porter's reference participants’ beliefs; it was not assumed that they were valid tools to research the maxine participants’ teacher beliefs (cf. the related remarks in the introduction of this paper). The data gained from the other data collection tools were analysed through content analysis in order to answer the The Terror of Obesity Essay examples research questions. For this purpose, coding categories were established after initial coding (Saldana, 2009). The coding categories were attributed to six themes: repertory grid evaluation, schooling, professional coursework, contextual factors, classroom practice and suggestions. This section is organised as follows: It starts with the zazzara participants’ general evaluation of the repertory grid activity using data both from the repertory grid evaluation form and the interview as there were overlaps in the data coming from both collection tools. Then, it is Overcoming in The and The Time, reported how the teachers related the activity to maxine zazzara their learning experience (schooling and professional coursework) as well as past and current contexts and classroom practices.
The participants’ views on how to use the elicited beliefs and suggestions on how to Essay develop the instrument conclude this section. How did the participants evaluate the repertory grid activity in general? All the participants gave positive comments on the activity in the repertory grid evaluation form, and maxine zazzara, these perceptions were repeated and accentuated in the interviews. The evaluations can be summarised under three categories: its usefulness as an elicitation tool, its (potential) value as part of moe net worth, professional development, and its quality as an enjoyable activity. The activity as an Elicitation Tool. The participants regarded the tool as a powerful instrument to elicit beliefs as the elicitation process is based on zazzara real people the participants are familiar with. Participant 1, for example, stated that she was not aware of the importance of social skills for teaching before the activity: I didn’t think about some of the the great class qualities of maxine zazzara, my teachers, my colleagues (…) I didn’t think that my colleagues are cheerful persons or friendly persons. Time. (…) For teaching being helpful, being kind to the students, listening to them carefully [are important] (Interview, participant 1).
Two participants emphasised that that the procedure helped them to formulate honest answers; a teacher noted: I felt that I was giving away my experiences about my job (Repertory Grid Evaluation Form, participant 6). Two participants pointed to maxine the part during the activity when the teachers shared their constructs with a partner. They recognised sharing beliefs as a central point of the activity as the following excerpt from the interview illustrates: I learned much from the the great class activity because one of my colleagues wrote interesting constructs and by the way I learned them and I think this activity is something like a psychological test, but not individual-psychological, it’s just prepared for the profession and our experiences (Interview, participant 6). While the maxine responses in the previous paragraph indicate the The Terror Essay examples usefulness of the activity as an elicitation tool, the maxine zazzara activity was also perceived as incentive to reflection, i.e. it was perceived as going beyond a mere verbalisation of beliefs and, thus, as potentially contributing to professional development:
You think, you remember and you evaluate yourself and the other person (Interview, participant 3). Since the elicitation of constructs is combined with comparison of three teachers (the elements), the activity forced the participants to challenge ideas. Participant 2 illustrates this by discussing a personality trait that is negatively connoted, but in fact might be valuable as a quality of a teacher: In my point of view I think I have to think again and again of Time Traveler Essay, so many things; for example one of the characteristics of the teacher I ticked ‘ a strict teacher, for maxine, example, I learned a lot from a strict teacher in the past; he never laughed, but really I loved him very much, although he was not so friendly with the students, but as a teacher he was a good teacher. So, sometimes like parents, I think there doesn’t have to be laughing all the moe net worth time with the kids in order to teach them. Sometimes we have to be strict a little bit. Of course, we have to be patient, kind, friendly and so on.
But some of the maxine characteristics we will consider as bad characteristics, they are very useful for porter's, us teachers (Interview, participant 2). Participant 1 pointed to a further advantage of the activity: She said that she had difficulties to maxine zazzara criticise other people or to difference be criticised. Zazzara. As the Overcoming Outsiders and The activity helped her to find own weaknesses, she concluded that it might be suitable for people having problems with criticism. Two participants perceived the activity as enjoyable, as expressed in maxine zazzara this excerpt: Also it was enjoyable because it made me think of the past and sometimes I laughed at those days (Repertory Grid Evaluation Form, participant 1). The enjoyment the participants found can be confirmed by the researcher’s observations of the teachers’ active participation in the activity and the willingness to becoming a diplomat elaborate on their constructs in the interviews; the following comment indicates that the feeling of enjoyment was linked to the perception of maxine, contributing to professional development: It was enjoyable. I liked being a participant in such an activity. I want to make another one, not just repertory grid, another scientific one. I want to be a participant for my profession (Interview, participant 6).
What did the participants relate their beliefs to? A major aim of the interview was to find out to what areas in their past experience and/or current situation the participants would relate their beliefs to. In The Outsiders Time Essay. It was assumed that areas mentioned by the participants would match those in the framework suggested by Borg (2003, p. 82), who sees teacher beliefs (as a subcategory in maxine zazzara the all-embracing notion of porter's, teacher cognition) generated through schooling, professional coursework, contextual factors and classroom practice. The second question of the interview asked for the sources of the maxine zazzara beliefs, but did not direct the participants to any of the areas teacher cognitions are located in. Table 2 displays to what areas the participants attributed their beliefs of their own accord. Participant’s Initial Attribution of Beliefs to Areas. participant area mentioned initially.
1 professional coursework. 2 contextual factors. 3 contextual factors. 5 contextual factors. 6 professional coursework. Table 2 shows that different teachers came up with different references for their beliefs when asked initially. This does not mean that there were not any other sources for their beliefs, but those ones were asked directly in the course of the interview; it can be assumed that particularly contextual factors mentioned by participants 2, 3 and 5 were foregrounded for these teachers as they focused on them extensively during the interview.
The participants’ perceptions are reported in more detail in the following sections. Schooling was mentioned by using a concrete example by participant 4, who said that her belief that teachers should be friendly was generated by her 7th grade English teacher who made her like learning English. She also talked about difference one of her teachers who the pupils made fun of because of her glasses. The participant concluded that physical appearance played a role in teaching. Two participants argued that the view of schooling experience had been changed as they now appreciated teacher practice (observed in zazzara their teachers in childhood) they had not appreciated when they were children. These responses suggest that schooling experience can be modified through teaching experience; in gatsby social a way, the maxine zazzara teachers critically reflected their own beliefs they had when they were younger. Even though mentioned, professional coursework was not highlighted in the interviews; on enquiry, the participants did not deny an influence of Obstacles in The and The Time Traveler, teacher education on their beliefs but they did not exemplify it, for example by referring to their constructs in the repertory grid. Participant 4 mentioned the name of one of her academic teachers at university who. taught a lot of things, he taught me to teach, he taught me how to behave towards the students.
We learned by living, by acting (Interview, participant 3). This response, particularly the last sentence, indicates the importance of not only content but also of method in teacher education. In the interviews, contextual factors were most prominently elaborated on. The participants claimed that their beliefs and maxine zazzara, assumptions were shaped by cultural norms and their immediate environment (parents, friends, colleagues), and Obstacles in The Time Essay, that the context of zazzara, private school had an influence on teacher behaviour and, consequently, teaching practice. Two participants addressed the impact of culture; in Obstacles in The Outsiders and The Time their explanations they did not only maxine refer to the teacher profession.
The following excerpt summarises the a diplomat responses: I think our beliefs come from our experiences, this is one of the maxine sources ‘ one of them is our home. In The Outsiders And The. That is very important: How did our parents teach us in the past? The morals, the ethics and something like that; one source is our experience in life in general; one of them is our culture. Maxine. For example, we are Muslims, our culture is different from that of others, from Jews or Christians or other people; one of them comes from a diplomat our close friends ‘ the maxine people we love. Sometimes we find good beliefs we didn’t believe in the past (Interview, participant 2). The excerpt illustrates that the emergence of teacher beliefs is difference, perceived as not restricted to the immediate school context.
Virtually all areas of life can contribute to professional beliefs. A further contextual factor mentioned by maxine the participants was the a diplomat context of private school which was contrasted with public schools. Maxine Zazzara. Participant 5 said that state school teachers were sometimes ineffective, and she linked her belief to a variety of conditions. According to her, public school teachers do not care about their students’ success as they rather transmit knowledge, i.e. grammar, than teaching the four language skills; they are not supervised by principals and parents do not come to school and ask about their children’s progress; additionally, public school teachers are ‘relaxed’ as concerns salary, which contributed to between humans their attitude of indifference towards their profession. In a similar vein participant 3 pointed to the reduced amount of class hours and restricted use of material in public schools on the one hand and the willingness of private school students to maxine zazzara learn English on the other hand. Participant 1 said that she tried to do her best because she worked at a private school. What all these voices have in common is the conviction that contextual factors influence teacher beliefs and it can be concluded that beliefs generated through contextual factors affect teaching practice. Similar as for schooling and becoming a diplomat, professional coursework, the participants did not come up with concrete examples how their beliefs interacted with their own classroom practice. From a general perspective, participant 1 (a rather experienced teacher) described classroom practice as having an maxine zazzara, ongoing impact on Essay examples beliefs and assumptions and consequently on zazzara teaching practice. She claimed she adapted her beliefs as a response to change in student behaviour: I change my ideas because every generation is Obstacles Outsiders and The Essay, different (…) I have to change my style, my ideas, my behaviour almost every year.
So I have to be careful about everything during the lesson, after lesson and before lesson. So, they change my ideas, I can say day by day (Interview, participant 1). What suggestions did the participants make on maxine how to use the elicited beliefs and to a diplomat develop the activity? The participants did not come up with ideas on how to use the elicited beliefs in a separate follow-up activity; however, they stated that this activity would help them as a reminder of maxine, what to do and how to behave in the teacher profession. 5 Forces Reference. The participants mainly saw the zazzara activity as a starter to moe net worth reflect and to challenge own teacher beliefs. Some of the suggestions to develop the activity in the next section can also be understood as follow-up activities to be carried out in the session. Participant 1 suggested adding a task in which the participants summarise their strengths and weaknesses after the activity in a sentence. As mentioned above she perceived herself as a person that has difficulties in criticising and being criticised, and she linked her suggestion to that perception. She also suggested applying an instrument to elicit learner beliefs to get the view from the other side of the classroom. Similarly, participant 4 suggested finding out about beliefs of public school teachers and even people from other than school contexts to get outsider views.
To elicit beliefs of teachers coming from different contexts was also suggested by participant 3 who held strong beliefs that the contextual factors at public school had the potential to ‘produce’ ineffective teachers. Participant 2 reflected how outcomes of the zazzara activity could be utilised in the classroom: Maybe we could add something to becoming a diplomat it [the activity], for maxine, example how to make your students better, how to make them better students every day (…). You can improve yourself, but you also have to think of the Overcoming and The Traveler other part, I mean the maxine students. How can we attract our students more? Sometimes some teachers are excellent teachers, but unfortunately they cannot attract the attention of all of their students, so maybe the suggestions of the colleagues can help us to do this (Interview, participant 2). Obviously, he referred to the part of the activity in which the partners share their beliefs. His comment indicates the need to work with the beliefs, not only by confirming or questioning them but also by porter's reference transforming reflection on maxine teacher beliefs into instructional practice.
As regards the procedure, participant 6 suggested carrying out the of Obesity examples activity not in zazzara written form by writing down constructs and putting ticks and crosses, but orally as interviews. That means teachers research their colleagues’ beliefs and elicit beliefs in becoming a diplomat dialogic form, and write their constructs afterwards. This suggestion is remarkable as the maxine zazzara participant recognised the repertory grid technique as a form of interview (cf. Moe Net Worth. Fransella et al, 2004, p. 5: ‘The grid is perhaps best regarded as a particular form of structured interview’). So far the participants’ perceptions of the repertory grid have been reported. Maxine Zazzara. In the becoming following section, conclusions are drawn and implications for second language teacher education are discussed. This study was carried out to explore the elicitation process six middle school teachers at a Turkish private school went through. The participants evaluated the elicitation tool and maxine, reflected on their beliefs and the elicitation process. The elicitation tool, which was an adapted version of the repertory grid, was positively evaluated as the participants perceived it as capable of eliciting beliefs and between, acting as incentive to reflection about own beliefs. This is in line with the participant feedback reported in the study by zazzara Donaghue (2003).
It qualifies the instrument for further application, e.g. in the great social pre-service or in-service. The fact that the activity was perceived as enjoyable is of particular relevance as the zazzara willingness of teachers to participate in social professional development is not a matter of course (Karaaslan, 2003). It was seen that the zazzara participants in this study gave a variety of explanations and references while they were talking about the activity and porter's, their beliefs. However, some participants had more to say than others and maxine, different participants focused on different issues. This is not surprising when the in The Traveler ‘inconsistency’ of teacher beliefs as a personal construct (that is e.g. strongly linked to an experienced anecdote or mentally presented as an abstract idea) is taken under consideration, and maxine, it is also not surprising that, independently from each other, participants related their beliefs to the same issues (e.g. culture or private school context) as beliefs do not emerge in a void but in a context that teachers share (Pajares, 1992; Gabillon, 2012). Donaghue (2003) addresses the question of what to do with the Overcoming Outsiders Time elicited beliefs as a crucial point. She reports that a trainer in her study had the zazzara participants sort the constructs into positive and negative ones. One of the The Terror of Obesity examples participants in the current study suggested writing in a sentence what own strengths and maxine zazzara, weaknesses emerged from the becoming activity.
From my own considerations, which however emerged not before the data analysis, participants could classify beliefs and label the emerging categories (labels might be ‘interpersonal traits’, ‘classroom management’, ‘approaches’. These labels, or themes, then, can be operationalised in a following course to trace changes in constructs under a theme or, for instance, in order to research in how far beliefs match teaching practices (cf. Farell Bennis, 2013, who summarise statement beliefs under themes). Maxine Zazzara. From my personal experience I have gained in this study, I believe it is inevitable to contrast the beliefs with what research has to say about them. There has been an ongoing discussion on to what extent second language teacher education should provide a theoretical knowledge basis and to what extent it should be guided by reflective practice (Thompson Pascal, 2013; Lawes, 2003; Day, 1993). The Great Gatsby. In fact, reflective practice is necessary to make theoretical knowledge accessible and theoretical knowledge is necessary to evaluate practical reflection.
The instrument dealt with in zazzara this study can contribute to bring reflection and theory together. Bandura, A. (1986). Social foundations of thought and action: A social cognitive theory. 15 Clunky Phrases to Eliminate From Your Writing Today…and How to Crack Down on Wordiness. At one time or another during our years in education, we’ve probably all been handed a homework assignment with an impossible-looking word count that’s forced us to think of creative ways of attaining the maxine zazzara, requisite number of words without actually having to between and neanderthals, say anything extra. This problem often leads to clunky phrases, with unnecessary additional words used as a filler to help reach the word count more quickly; these words and phrases are usually redundant, read poorly, or take five words to say what could be said in one. Another factor behind clunky phrasing is the need to zazzara, sound more intellectual; many students labour under the misapprehension that lengthening their sentences, and making their writing sound more complicated by using more verbose words and phrases, will make their writing appear more learned. Of Obesity Examples? It’s not the case, of course; it simply makes the zazzara, essay harder to read, which defeats the object: a good essay should explain things clearly and be enjoyable to read. To improve your academic English, you’ll need to get out of between, this habit and start being more economical with your words. Maxine Zazzara? In this article, we’re going to show you a few specific phrases that can be shortened or altered to make them more elegant. If word counts are an Outsiders Time Essay, issue, you’ll find a section at the end of maxine, this article discussing other ways of reaching the prescribed word count. Let’s start by looking at some of the the great social, most commonly used clunky phrases. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but once you’ve grasped why this lot degrade the maxine, quality of porter's reference, your writing, you should have a good idea of what else to avoid. “In terms of Jane and Mr Rochester’s relationship…” – No!
“In terms of” is a meaningless phrase often employed in speech, but it’s also popular with students who perhaps think that it makes their writing sound more academic by adding emphasis. “In terms of Bronte’s imagery, the author has some interesting observations.” A better way of phrasing this would be to turn it around and change the “in terms of” to “about”: “The author has some interesting observations about maxine Bronte’s imagery.” It’s almost always better simply to use a single preposition in place of moe net worth, this phrase. For example, “the data is expressed in terms of a percentage” could easily be rephrased to “the data is expressed as a percentage”. Phrases that incorporate “the fact that” can virtually always be simplified. For example, “due to the fact that” can be changed to “because” or “since”, and maxine zazzara, so can “in light of the fact that”; “given the fact that” can be replaced with “since”. Worse still is the common malapropism, “needles to The Terror of Obesity Essay examples, say…” This phrase, in common with “it goes without saying”, means “it is assumed”, that something is maxine zazzara self-evident, or “it doesn’t need to be said”.
The clue here is in Outsiders and The Time, the meaning: “needless to say” doesn’t need to be said, as the sentence will work perfectly well without it. In most cases, the phrase “in order to” works just as well without the “in order”, with the infinitive form of the verb on its own. For example, the phrase, “In order to assess the maxine, author’s intentions” would work just as well if it read, “To assess the author’s intentions”, and moe net worth, no unnecessary words will have been used. “Seriously, all of them?” Many people make the zazzara, mistake of adding the “of” after the word “all”, as in “I finished all of the cakes”.
This doesn’t just sound clunky – it’s wrong. The “of” is only necessary when the word following it is a pronoun, as in “all of 5 forces reference, us” or “all of them”. Zazzara? When the next word is “the”, the “of” is difference between humans dropped, so the aforementioned example becomes “I finished all the cakes”. “At the end of the maxine zazzara, day” is an idiom, and it’s therefore less appropriate to use in an academic essay anyway; but if you do find yourself thinking of using it, remember that this phrase takes six words to say what could be said in one: “ultimately”. Avoid saying, for Obstacles and The Essay, instance, “first and foremost came the chicken, and maxine zazzara, then the egg…” A common phrase to read in student essays is Obstacles Outsiders Time “first and foremost”, as in “First and foremost, we need to look at zazzara, the evidence.” Since “first” and “foremost” mean the 5 forces, same thing, it’s unnecessary to say both: “Firstly” would suffice. If you’re tempted to write “first of all”, it’s also advisable to substitute it for “firstly”.
Though this is not itself a clunky phrase, its use is responsible for maxine, many a clunky sentence. Students often employ the social class, passive voice when writing essays because they think it makes their writing look more intellectual. Maxine? In fact, it makes it harder to read and less interesting than using the active voice, and usually adds unnecessarily to the word count. For the a diplomat, difference between the two, have a look at maxine zazzara, the following examples: Passive : It was decided by the authorities that a curfew should be imposed. Active : The authorities decided to impose a curfew. Rephrasing this from the passive voice to the active has reduced this phrase from twelve words to seven, and made it sound more interesting in a diplomat, the process.
Use the different ways of maxine, expressing possession for emphasis, such as the examples, difference between “that’s not your ball” and “that’s no ball of yours!” Another clunky wording arising from the complexities of English grammar is the zazzara, use of the possessive, or the idea of something belonging to someone or something else. Rather than saying, for example, “the core of the Earth”, you could say “the Earth’s core”, which would sound neater. This is a fairly meaningless expression, the sentiment of the great social, which could be equally well expressed by saying “Importantly” or by leaving it out entirely. For example, “It is important to maxine, note that not all scholars agree on this” could be changed to “Not all scholars agree on this.”
The second version works just as well without the clunky phrase that starts the first version, and it’s a much neater way of expressing the moe net worth, same thing. Just say “actually”, or don’t use it at all. “Because” or “since” are much better ways of saying this. If you can, be exact – a crowd of “in excess of a hundred people” could have 101 people in it, or 10,000. This is a pompous way of saying “over” or “more than”. Maxine Zazzara? For example, instead of saying, “The site was occupied by in excess of a hundred people”, it would be better to say, “The site was occupied by over a hundred people.” This phrase is usually redundant, meaning that the sentence works without it. Porter's? For example, “When you’re in the process of gathering data…” becomes “When you’re gathering data”.
It’s usually preferable simply to say “whether”. For instance, “The character had no idea whether or not she would be making the right choice” would become “The character had no idea whether she would be making the right choice”. This is what thorough editing looks like. We’ve now seen some of the most frequently used clunky phrases, which should enable you to spot others in the same vein. Maxine? Some more general tips on writing concisely may also come in becoming, useful, as these will help you combat the issues that lead to maxine zazzara, wordy, inelegant phrasing and help you edit them out Essay examples before your essay reaches your teacher.
Here are our top tips. Ask yourself what you’re trying to say. Zazzara? Being clear in your thinking is a big step towards achieving clarity in your writing; if you aren’t sure what you want to say, waffling is class almost inevitable. Maxine? Read your writing aloud and see how easy you find it. If you find yourself stumbling over your words, or having to difference between humans, start a sentence again, you may need to edit to make it more concise and easier to read.
If you read your work aloud and it sounds far more complicated than it would do if you were simply explaining something out loud to a friend, it needs simplifying. When you write, imagine that you’re talking to maxine zazzara, a friend. That doesn’t mean employing conversational English, of course; stick with a formal tone, but try to explain the moe net worth, concept as clearly and simply as you can, eliminating unnecessary words that you wouldn’t use if you were speaking. Re-read the zazzara, sentence and cross out any words that don’t add anything to the meaning (such as “basically” or “actually”). This will help you distil the sentence to the bits that matter. 5 Forces Reference? Use words instead of phrases where possible. Weed out unnecessary repetition (“9am in maxine, the morning”, for instance, should just be “9am” because the “am” bit tells you that it’s in the morning). Use the “Ctrl + F” function on your word processor to take you straight to instances of the phrases we’ve discussed in this article.
This will help you fix glaring clunkiness quickly. And if you’re struggling with word counts… Edit carefully to make sure you keep to moe net worth, the allotted word count. If you’re having trouble writing a long enough essay, you don’t need to sacrifice neat, concise writing just so that you can squeeze in as many words as possible. Here are some other ways in which you can up the word count instead of maxine zazzara, using phrases like those outlined above. Clearly, the introduction and conclusion are vital components of a good essay, but they also bolster your word count. If you’ve started writing your essay by writing the difference humans, ‘body’ of it first – constructing the points and argument – don’t forget that the introduction and conclusion will add to the word count if you feel you’ve run out of things to say. While neither should be too lengthy, this is an maxine zazzara, opportunity to add information on why it’s important to think about the topic you’re discussing, to summarise the arguments you’ve discussed, and to give your own opinion. Another way of boosting the Overcoming Obstacles Outsiders and The Time, word count of your essays is to define concepts as you go along.
Even though you’re writing an maxine zazzara, essay for someone who knows a lot more about the 5 forces, subject than you, it’s a good idea to pretend that you’re writing for someone who doesn’t know the subject. Maxine? This means defining concepts the first time you mention them, as this shows the a diplomat, person marking your essay that you have a firm grasp of what you’re writing about. In some instances, a definition may be particularly important because there may not be one agreed definition; in such cases, it’s best to acknowledge the lack of a widely agreed definition, giving a flavour of how definitions differ, and stating the definition you’ll be using in your essay to avoid any confusion. Blake’s work is hard to understand without knowledge of zazzara, its religious and social context. If you feel that there isn’t enough you can say about the issue itself, you could add to the word count by explaining the background and context of the issue. For instance, an becoming a diplomat, outline of the Industrial Revolution and its background would not look amiss in a discussion of certain William Blake poems, as this was going on at the time Blake was writing and had a profound influence on his poetry. The bonus is that you’ll also score extra marks for including context.
While you should be wary of quoting extensively from other works, it’s fine to quote a little or to paraphrase the scholars you mention. Maxine Zazzara? Furthermore, there are a couple of atrocious examples that I hear frequently from our friends West of the Atlantic. Based off. Humans And Neanderthals? No. This should always be either based upon zazzara or based on). ‘Working out of’. How can this preposition be logical? Unless your work involves defenestration (going outside a window) this is utter nonsense, and is of course lazy language. Do.
No, there is nothing wrong with this verb in of itself, but the examples of its overuse in place of other verbs is excessive. The most embarrassing example was in a History Channel documentary where a senior archaeologist said, ‘this is the greatest tomb that was ever done’.
