Shari'a and Violence in romeo and juliet act 3 scene 1 summary, American Mosques. by Mordechai Kedar and David Yerushalmi. Middle East Quarterly. How great is the danger of extremist violence in the name of Islam in in the Essay, the United States? Recent congressional hearings into this question by Rep.

Peter King (Republican of New York), chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, have generated a firestorm of controversy among his colleagues, the press, and the general public. Though similar hearings have taken place at least fourteen times since 2001,[1] King was labeled a latter-day Joe McCarthy and the hearings called an romeo and juliet 1 summary assault on civil liberties and a contemporary witch-hunt. Factors Dissatisfaction In Adolescent Girls:. Yet the act 3 1 summary, larger dilemmas outlined by both the congressman and some of of the preamble his witnesses remain: To what extent are American Muslims, native-born as well as naturalized, being radicalized by Islamists? And what steps can those who are sworn to the protection of American citizenry take that will uncover and disrupt the plots of those willing to take up arms against others for the sake of jihad? Root Causes and Enabling Mechanisms. A comprehensive study of the relationship between Shari'a adherence and incitement to violence in American mosques found that mosques that segregated men from women during prayer service were more likely to contain violence-positive materials than those where men and women were not segregated. One study by Quintan Wiktorowicz, assistant professor of international studies at Rhodes College and now on the staff of the National Security Council,[3] noted that modern jihadists legitimize their violent activities by relying on the same textual works as their nonviolent Salafist counterparts. However, the approach taken to these texts by the violent jihadist may be distinguished from that of the nonviolent Salafist insofar as the jihadist uses the principles advanced by both classical and modern Islamic scholars and ideologues and adapts them to scene, modern situations in a way that provides a broader sanction for the permissible use of violence.[4]

Further, in 2007, Paul Gill concluded that terrorist organizations seek societal support by creating a culture of martyrdom and that one theme common to suicide bombers was the support they received from a community that esteemed the concept of in Adolescent A Longitudinal martyrdom. Thus, a complex dynamic is at work between a terrorist organization, society, and individuals with the interplay between these three dimensions enabling radicalization and terrorist attacks.[5] Another item that may help to and juliet scene 1 summary, understand the growth of modern jihadism appears in Marc Sageman's 2004 study, which found that 97 percent of jihadists studied had become increasingly devoted to forms of Salafist Islam highly adherent to Shari'a (Islamic law) while on their path to radicalization, despite many coming from less rigorous devotional levels during their youths. This increase in devotion to Salafist Islam was measured by outwardly observable behaviors such as wearing traditional Arabic, Pakistani, or Afghan clothing or growing a beard.[6] When viewed together, a picture emerges that may give researchers, as well as law enforcement officials, a way to of the, monitor or potentially to predict where violent jihad may take root. Potential recruits who are swept up in this movement may find their inspiration and encouragement in and juliet act 3, a place with ready access to classic and modern literature that is positive toward jihad and violence, where highly Shari'a-adherent behavior is practiced, and where a society exists that in some form promotes a culture of martyrdom or at least engages in activities that are supportive of violent jihad. The mosque can be such a place. That the mosque is a societal apparatus that might serve as a support mechanism for violent jihad may seem self-evident, but for it to be a useful means for measuring radicalization requires empirical evidence. A 2007 study by the New York city police department noted that, in the context of the problems utilitarianism, mosque, high levels of Shari'a adherence, termed Salafi ideology by the authors of the report, may relate to scene, support for violent jihad. Specifically, it found that highly Shari'a-adherent mosques have played a prominent role in radicalization.[7] Another study found a relationship between frequency of Essay on Mormon History and Joseph Smith mosque attendance and a predilection for and juliet supporting suicide attacks but discovered no empirical evidence linking support for suicide bombings to Do Not in the Trap of Little Essay, some measure of religious devotion (defined and measured by frequency of prayer).[8]

However, the study suffers from a major methodological flaw, namely, reliance on self- reporting of romeo act 3 prayer frequency. Muslims would be under social and psychological pressure to report greater prayer frequency because their status as good or pious believers is linked to whether they fulfill the religious obligation to pray five times a day.[9] This piety is not dependent on problems, regular mosque attendance as Muslims are permitted to pray outside of romeo act 3 a mosque environment whenever necessary.[10] Hence, the problems with, pressure to romeo act 3 scene, over-report exists for self-reporting of prayer frequency but is not present in self-reporting of frequency of mosque attendance, which is a measure of both coalitional or group commitment and religious devotion. Thus, there is a need for the study and corroboration of Essay a relationship between high levels of Shari'a adherence as a form of religious devotion and coalitional commitment, Islamic literature that shows violence in a positive light, and institutional support for violent jihad. By way of filling this lacuna, the authors of this article undertook a survey specifically designed to and juliet, determine empirically whether a correlation exists between observable measures of religious devotion linked to Shari'a adherence in American mosques and the presence of Dissatisfaction Investigation violence-positive materials at those mosques. The survey also sought to ascertain whether a correlation exists between the presence of violence-positive materials at a mosque and the promotion of jihadism by romeo scene 1 summary, the mosque's leadership through recommending the goals of the preamble, study of these materials or other manifest behaviors.

Identifying Shari'a-Adherent Behaviors. Shari'a is the and juliet 1 summary, Islamic system of law based primarily on two sources held by on Mormon History Smith, Muslims to be respectively direct revelation from God and divinely inspired: the Qur'an and the Sunna (sayings, actions, and traditions of romeo and juliet act 3 scene Muhammad). There are other jurisprudential sources for Shari'a derived from the Warren Jeffs: Man Essay, legal rulings of Islamic scholars. These scholars, in turn, may be adherents of differing schools of Islamic jurisprudence. And Juliet. Notwithstanding those differences, the divergence at A Wanted, the level of actual law is, given the fullness of the corpus juris, confined to and juliet act 3 1 summary, relatively few marginal issues.

Thus, there is general unity and agreement across the Sunni-Shiite divide and across the various Sunni madh'habs (jurisprudential schools) on Essay on The Decline Diseases, core normative behaviors.[11] Surveyors were asked to observe and and juliet act 3 1 summary, record selected behaviors deemed to be Shari'a-adherent. These behaviors were selected precisely because they constitute observable and measurable practices of an orthodox form of Islam as opposed to internalized, non-observable articles of faith. Such visible modes of conduct are considered by traditionalists to have been either exhibited or commanded by Muhammad as recorded in the Sunna and later discussed and preserved in canonical Shari'a literature. The selected behaviors are among the most broadly accepted by legal practitioners of Jeffs: A Wanted Islam and are not those practiced only by and juliet act 3 1 summary, a rigid subgroup within IslamSalafists, for example.

Among the Essay on The Decline, behaviors observed at the mosques and romeo and juliet scene, scored as Shari'a-adherent were: (a) women wearing the Decline Diseases, hijab (head covering) or niqab (full-length shift covering the entire female form except for the eyes); (b) gender segregation during mosque prayers; and (c) enforcement of straight prayer lines. Behaviors that were not scored as Shari'a-adherent included: (a) women wearing just a modern hijab , a scarf-like covering that does not cover all of the hair, or no covering; (b) men and women praying together in the same room; and (c) no enforcement by the imam, lay leader, or worshipers of romeo act 3 scene straight prayer lines. The normative importance of a woman's hair covering is evidenced by two central texts, discussed at length below, Reliance of the and Joseph, Traveller and Fiqh as-Sunna (Law of the Sunna), both of which express agreement on the obligation of a woman to wear the and juliet act 3 1 summary, hijab : There is no such dispute over what constitutes a woman's aurah [private parts/nakedness]. With. It is and juliet stated that her entire body is aurah and must be covered, except her hands and face God does not accept the prayer of an adult woman unless she is wearing a head covering ( khimar , hijab ).[12] The nakedness of a woman (even if a young girl) consists of the whole body except the face and hands. The nakedness of a woman is of the that which invalidates the prayer if exposed. It is recommended for a woman to wear a covering over her head ( khimar ), a full length shift, and a heavy slip under it that does not cling to the body.[13] In a similar fashion, Shari'a requires that the genders be separated during prayers. While both Reliance of the Traveller and Fiqh as-Sunna express a preference that women should pray at romeo act 3 scene, home rather than the Do Not Fall Sleep Essay, mosque,[14] they agree that if women do pray in the mosque, they should pray in lines separate from the men.[15] Additionally, authoritative Shari'a literature agrees that the and juliet 1 summary, men's prayer lines should be straight, that men should be close together within those lines, and that the imam should enforce prayer line alignment.[16] The mosques surveyed contained a variety of texts, ranging from A Wanted contemporary printed pamphlets and handouts to classic texts of the romeo 1 summary, Islamic canon.

From the perspective of promoting violent jihad, the of the, literature types were ranked in the survey from romeo and juliet 1 summary severe to moderate to with, nonexistent. The texts selected were all written to serve as normative and instructive tracts and are not scriptural. This is scene 1 summary important because a believer is free to Essay on The Decline, understand scripture literally, figuratively, or merely poetically when it does not have a normative or legal gloss provided by Islamic jurisprudence. The moderate-rated literature was authored by scene 1 summary, respected Shari'a religious and/or legal authorities; while expressing positive attitudes toward violence, it was predominantly concerned with the Essay History Smith, more mundane aspects of religious worship and ritual. The severe material, by contrast, largely consists of relatively recent texts written by ideologues, rather than Shari'a scholars, such as Abul Ala Mawdudi and Sayyid Qutb. These, as well as materials published and disseminated by the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, are primarily, if not exclusively, aimed at using Islam to advance a violent political agenda. Mawdudi (1903-79), for one, believed that it was legitimate to wage violent jihad against infidel colonizers in order to 1 summary, gain independence and spread Islam. His Jihad in Islam , found in Essay on Mormon and Joseph, many of the mosques surveyed, instructed followers to employ force in pursuit of a Shari'a-based order:

These [Muslim] men who propagate religion are not mere preachers or missionaries, but the functionaries of act 3 God [so that they may be witnesses for the people], and it is goals of the preamble their duty to wipe out oppression, mischief, strife, immorality, high handedness, and unlawful exploitation from the world by force of arms.[17] Similarly, Qutb's Milestones serves as the political and ideological backbone of the scene, current global jihad movement. Qutb, for example, sanctions violence against those who stand in the way of Islam's expansion: If someone does this [prevents others from accepting Islam], then it is the duty of Islam to fight him until either he is goals preamble killed or until he declares his submission.[18] These materials differ from other severe- and moderate-rated materials because they are not Islamic legal texts per se but rather are polemical works seeking to advance a politicized Islam through violence, if necessary. Nor are these authors recognized Shari'a scholars. The same cannot be said for some classical works that are also supportive of violence in the name of 1 summary Islam. Works by several respected jurists and scholars from the four major Sunni schools of jurisprudence, dating from the Warren A Wanted Man Essay, eighth to fourteenth centuries, are all in act 3 scene 1 summary, agreement that violent jihad against non-Muslims is a religious obligation.[19] Such behavior is normative, legally-sanctioned violence not confined to modern writers with a political axe to grind.

Nor does its presence in classical Muslim works make it a relic of some medieval past. While Umdat as-Salik (Reliance of the Traveler) may have been compiled in the fourteenth century, al-Azhar University, perhaps the preeminent center of Risk Factors in Adolescent Sunni learning in the world, stated in romeo and juliet scene, its 1991 certification of the Essay on The Diseases, English translation that the book conforms to romeo act 3, the practice and Essay on The Decline of Infectious Diseases, faith of the orthodox Sunni community.[20] While addressing a host of theological matters and detailed instructions as to how Muslims should order their daily routine to demonstrate piety and commitment to scene, Islam, this certified, authoritative text spends eleven pages expounding on the applicability of jihad as violence directed against non-Muslims, stating for example: The caliph makes war upon Jews, Christians, and Diseases, Zoroastrians provided he has first invited them to enter Islam in faith and practice, and if they will not, then invited them to enter the social order of Islam by paying the non-Muslim poll tax.[21] The caliph fights all other peoples until they become Muslim because they are not a people with a book, nor honored as such, and are not permitted to romeo act 3, settle with paying the poll tax.[22] The Fiqh as-Sunna and Do Not in the Trap Sleep Essay, Tafsir Ibn Kathir are examples of works that were rated moderate for purposes of act 3 scene this survey. The former, which focuses primarily on the internal Muslim community, the family, and the individual believer and not on violent jihad, was especially moderate in its endorsement of Jeffs: Man Essay violence. Relatively speaking, the Fiqh as-Sunna expresses a more restrained view of violent jihad, in that it does not explicitly call for a holy war against the West even though it understands the Western influence on Islamic governments as a force that is destructive to Islam itself.[23] Nonetheless, such texts do express positive views toward the use of violence against the other, as expressed in the following: Ibn Abbas reported that the scene 1 summary, Prophet, upon whom be peace, said, The ties of Smith Islam and the principles of the religion are three, and whoever leaves one of them becomes an unbeliever, and his blood becomes lawful: testifying that there is no god except God, the obligatory prayers, and act 3 scene 1 summary, the fast of Ramadan. Another narration states, If anyone leaves one of [the three principles], by God he becomes an unbeliever, and no voluntary deeds or recompense will be accepted from him, and his blood and wealth become lawful. This is a clear indication that such a person is to be killed.[24] Similarly in Tafsir Ibn Kathir : Perform jihad against Fall in the Trap of Little Essay, the disbelievers with the sword, and and juliet act 3 scene 1 summary, be harsh with the Do Not in the Sleep Essay, hypocrites with words, and this is the jihad performed against romeo act 3 scene, them.[25]

The survey's findings, explored in depth below, were that 51 percent of mosques had texts that either advocated the Essay Decline Diseases, use of violence in romeo and juliet act 3, the pursuit of a Shari'a-based political order or advocated violent jihad as a duty that should be of Do Not in the Sleep Essay paramount importance to and juliet act 3 1 summary, a Muslim; 30 percent had only texts that were moderately supportive of violence like the Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Fiqh as-Sunna ; 19 percent had no violent texts at Jeffs: A Wanted, all. A representative sample of romeo act 3 one hundred mosques throughout the United States was surveyed. Table 1 presents the distribution of goals of the preamble mosques by state. One quarter of the mosques had 10 or fewer worshipers; 50 percent had up to 28 worshipers; 75 percent had up to 70; the largest mosque had an estimated 1,700 worshipers. Table 1: Number of Mosques Surveyed by scene, State. The study found a statistically significant association between the severity of violence-positive texts on mosque premises and Shari'a-adherent behaviors. As indicated in problems with, Table 2, mosques that segregated men from romeo and juliet act 3 1 summary women during prayer service were more likely to contain violence-positive materials than those mosques where men and women were not segregated. Mosques that did not segregate genders were also less likely to possess violence-positive materials (26 percent) but nonetheless did carry both moderate (27 percent) and severe materials (47 percent). Table 2: Shari'a-adherent Mosques and Man Essay, Violence-positive Materials. Segregation in prayer.

Imam or lay leader has Sunna beard. [ii] Has Riyadh as-Salaheen (n=7) or more extreme fiqh material. [iii] In 1 mosque there was no prayer and romeo act 3 scene, surveyor could not determine the usual practice. [iv] 4 mosques did not have a leader. [v] 3 with no beard included in Risk Girls: A Longitudinal, this category. [vi] 3 had traditional beards with henna; and all were in the severe group. They were combined with this group for romeo and juliet scene ease of reporting.

[vii] In 1 case it was not determined. As was the case with gender segregation, those mosques that displayed strict alignment of men's prayer lines were more likely than their less observant counterparts to contain materials from with utilitarianism both the moderate and severe categories. Thus, 59 percent of such mosques contained severe texts as opposed to 42 percent of mosques that did not enforce strict prayer line alignment. Romeo Act 3 1 Summary. Conversely, only 4 percent of mosques with strict prayer line alignment possessed no violence-positive texts while 36 percent of their less observant counterparts exhibited no such literature. Whether the mosque's imam or lay leader wore a traditional beard was also predictive of whether the mosque would contain violence-positive materials on premises. Problems Utilitarianism. Of the mosques led by traditionally bearded imams, 61 percent contained literature in the severe category, 33 percent contained only romeo and juliet 1 summary, moderate-rated materials, and 7 percent did not contain any. Forty-six percent of the Warren A Wanted Man Essay, mosques in romeo scene 1 summary, which the imam did not wear a traditional beard contained severe materials, 28 percent had moderate-rated texts, and 26 percent contained none on site. Other aspects of an imam's or lay leader's appearance, such as wearing a head covering or traditional garb like a thoub (full-length, white gown with long sleeves) were not statistically significant. Table 3 reveals another statistically significant finding associated with mosque attendance. Mosques that contained written materials in the severe category were the best attended, followed by those with only Do Not in the Trap of Little Essay, moderate-rated materials, trailed in turn by those lacking such texts.

Mosques with severe materials had a mean attendance of 118 worshipers while mosques containing only moderate materials had a mean attendance of 60 worshipers; mosques that contained no violence-positive literature had a mean attendance of 15 worshipers. Table 3: Violence-positive Materials, Mosque Attendance, and Shari'a-based Worshiper Characteristics. [ii] Has Riyadh as-Salaheen (n=7) or more extreme fiqh material. [iii] In 2 mosques only the and juliet act 3 scene, imam was present. [iv] Data in parentheses that follow percentage figures denote the standard deviation. [v] Women were present in 65 mosques. [vi] Boys were present in Essay History and Joseph, 63 mosques. The adoption or rejection of Western dress by male worshipers was yet another telling indicator of the presence of 1 summary violence-positive materials.

In mosques that contained no violence-positive materials, an average of 73 percent of the men wore Western garb. In those mosques in which only moderate literature was available, 35 percent of male worshipers wore Western clothing; almost the same figure (34 percent) was exhibited in mosques featuring Qutb, et al. The survey was unable to find a statistically significant indicator when it came to women wearing a modern hijab as opposed to problems, the more conservative traditional hijab , which covers all of the romeo act 3, hair, or the niqab , which covers the whole body other than the eyes. This category recorded the distinction between an adult female worshiper wearing the less conservative modern hijab and the traditional Shari'a-adherent hijab and niqab . Perhaps more troubling than the correlation between jihadist literature and problems with utilitarianism, Shari'a-adherent behaviors within a mosque was the role played by imams in romeo act 3, recommending that worshipers study material that promote violence. The more manifestly Shari'a-adherent a mosque, the more likely its imam was to recommend the study of violence-positive texts. Thus, as seen in Table 4, 96 percent of the imams in mosques that observed strict prayer line alignment recommended such reading material. Similarly, 93 percent of the imams who sported a traditional, full beard endorsed the Essay, study of such writings.

But while the presence of certain Shari'a-adherent behaviors correlated almost one-to-one with the promotion of the violence-positive texts, the absence of these attributes should not be construed as a sign of true moderation. Romeo Act 3 Scene 1 Summary. In mosques that did not practice strict prayer line alignment, a striking 72 percent of imams nonetheless recommended violence-positive materials. Similarly, 78 percent of problems with imams who did not wear a traditional beard were proponents of these texts. Table 4: Shari'a-based Mosque Prayer, Shari'a-based Imam Characteristics, and Imam Recommended Violence-positive Material. Segregation in and juliet scene, prayer. Beard of imam or lay leader. [ii] In 4 mosques, neither an imam nor a lay leader was present. However, in 1 of goals these 4 cases the imam had made clear recommendations on the mosque's webpage. [iii] In 1 case it was not determined. Moreover, mosques where the imam recommended violence-positive materials for and juliet study were marked by a higher presence of worshipersboth men and womenwho took on a Shari'a-adherent appearance and Warren Jeffs: A Wanted Man Essay, a lower percentage of worshipers of a more assimilative or Western appearance (see Table 5).

As such, these mosques were much better attended than those where such materials were not promoted. Imams at 82 of the 100 mosques surveyed recommended that worshipers study violence-positive materials; these mosques experienced a mean attendance of 96 worshipers and a median attendance of 39. At the same time, at the 15 mosques surveyed where the imam did not recommend the study of romeo act 3 scene 1 summary such texts, the problems utilitarianism, mean attendance was approximately 17 worshipers with a median attendance figure of 4. Table 5: Mosque Attendance, Shari'a-based Worshiper Characteristics, and Imam Recommended Violence-positive Material. [ii] Data in parentheses that follow percentage figures denote the standard deviation. [iii] Women were present in 65 mosques. Data collected on percent women with niqab (rare), hijab, and modern hijab. The survey found a strong correlation between the presence of severe violence-promoting literature and mosques featuring written, audio, and video materials that actually promoted such acts. And Juliet Act 3 Scene. By promotion of jihad, the study included literature encouraging worshipers to engage in goals of the preamble, terrorist activity, to and juliet 1 summary, provide financial support to jihadists, and to promote the establishment of goals of the a caliphate in the United States. Romeo And Juliet Scene 1 Summary. These materials also explicitly praised acts of terror against the West; praised symbols or role models of violent jihad; promoted the use of force, terror, war, and violence to implement the Shari'a; emphasized the Essay of Infectious Diseases, inferiority of non-Muslim life; promoted hatred and romeo and juliet act 3, intolerance toward non-Muslims or notional Muslims; and endorsed inflammatory materials with anti-U.S. views.

As Table 6 demonstrates, of the Factors Dissatisfaction Girls: Investigation, 51 mosques that contained severe materials, 100 percent were led by imams who recommended that worshipers study texts that promote violence. Table 6: Violence-positive Materials and Promotion of Violent Jihad. [ii] Has Riyadh as-Salaheen (n=7) or more extreme fiqh material. [iii] Denominator is 17, 2 in and juliet act 3 scene 1 summary, this column had no imam or leader. For example, mosques containing violence-positive materials were substantially more likely to include materials promoting financial support of Decline Diseases terror than mosques that did not contain such texts. And Juliet Scene 1 Summary. A disturbing 98 percent of mosques with severe texts included materials promoting financial support of terror. Those with only moderate-rated materials on goals of the, site were not markedly different, with 97 percent providing such materials. These results stand in stark contrast to the mosques with no violence-positive materials on their premises where only 5 percent provided materials urging financial support of terror. These results were comparable when using other indicators of jihad promotion. Thus, 98 percent of romeo and juliet act 3 scene mosques that contained severe-rated literature included materials promoting establishing an Islamic caliphate in the United States as did 97 percent of Warren mosques containing only moderate-rated materials.

By contrast, only one out of the 19 mosques (5 percent) that had no violence-positive literature advocated this. Similarly, mosques with severe or moderate materials invited speakers known to have promoted violent jihad (76 percent and 60 percent respectively) versus one mosque out of 19 (5 percent) which did not contain violence-positive texts. Finally, three patterns of romeo scene 1 summary behavior indicating promotion of violent jihad did not strongly correlate to the presence of violence-positive literature. Despite the Factors for Body Dissatisfaction in Adolescent Girls:, presence of severe texts in such mosques, only a small number actually encouraged joining a terrorist organization, openly collected monies for such organizations, or distributed memorabilia featuring jihadists or terrorist organizations. And Juliet Act 3 1 Summary. Although very few mosques engaged openly in these activities, a correlation between these activities and Do Not Fall in the of Little, the presence and severity of violence-positive literature was shown to romeo and juliet scene 1 summary, exist. The conclusions to utilitarianism, be drawn from this survey are dismal at best, offering empirical support for and juliet act 3 scene previous anecdotal studies on in the Trap of Little Sleep, the connection between highly Shari'a-adherent mosques and political violence in the name of Islam.

The mosques where there were greater indicators of Shari'a adherence were more likely to contain materials that conveyed a positive attitude toward employing violent jihad against the West and non-Muslims. The fact that spiritual sanctioners who help individuals become progressively more radicalized are connected to highly Shari'a-adherent mosques is another cause for deep concern.[26] In almost every instance, the imams at and juliet, the mosques where violence-positive materials were available recommended that worshipers study texts that promoted violence. The survey also demonstrates that there are mosques and History and Joseph Smith, mosque-going Muslims who are interested in a non-Shari'a-centric Islam where tolerance of the other, at least as evidenced by and juliet scene 1 summary, the absence of jihad-promoting literature, is the norm. Mosques where violence-positive literature was not present exhibited significantly fewer indicators of orthodox, Shari'a-adherent behaviors and Jeffs: Man Essay, were also significantly less likely to promote violent jihad or invite speakers supportive of violent jihad. And Juliet Act 3 Scene 1 Summary. These non-Shari'a-centric mosques may provide a foundation from which a reformed Islam and its followers can more completely integrate into liberal, Western citizenship. The results of this survey do not indicate the percentage of American Muslims that actually attend mosques with any regularity, nor does it reveal what relative percentage of American Muslims demonstrate Shari'a-adherent or non-adherent behaviors. Moreover, although this study shows that imams at Shari'a-adherent mosques recommend studying violence-positive materials and of the preamble, utilize their mosques for support of act 3 scene 1 summary violent jihad, it does not capture the individual attendees' attitudes toward religiously sanctioned violence. However, it is at least reasonable to conclude that worshipers at such mosques are more sympathetic to the message of the literature present at those mosques and to Risk Factors for Body A Longitudinal Investigation, what is being preached there. A follow-up survey of individual mosque attendees would provide insight regarding the relationship, if any, between Shari'a-adherence on the individual level and the individual's attitude toward violent jihad. A recent study by Andrew F. And Juliet Act 3 Scene 1 Summary. March examined whether Islamic doctrine would allow Muslims to cooperate socially with non-Muslims and sincerely affirm liberal citizenship as that term is understood in on The Decline of Infectious Diseases, its Western, democratic sense. He argued that there were grounds for an overlapping consensus but also noted that present-day Salafists cite texts holding that Muslims are either at romeo and juliet scene, war with non-Muslims or, at of the preamble, best, are in a state devoid of any obligation to cooperate socially with them.[27] Additionally, March noted that the underpinnings of his theoretical consensus might be negated by scene, empirical evidence showing that a large percentage of Muslims are unaware of [or reject] arguments that advocate for Western notions of liberal citizenship.[28]

Although released before March's study, an April 2007 survey conducted by presented such empirical evidence. The survey found that majorities in goals of the preamble, Morocco, Egypt, Pakistan, and romeo act 3 scene 1 summary, Indonesiaostensibly moderate Muslim countriesfavored a strict application of Shari'a law in every Islamic country and keeping Western values out of Islamic counties.[29] However, that survey reports the attitudes of Jeffs: A Wanted residents in non-Western countries that enforce Shari'a to varying degrees. It might be expected that Muslims in the Westwho are immersed in Western culture, values, and romeo and juliet act 3 1 summary, democracywould express different attitudes than their counterparts in the Middle East, Far East, and North Africa. Unfortunately, the results of the current survey strongly suggest that Islamas it is generally practiced in mosques across the United Statescontinues to manifest a resistance to the kind of tolerant religious and legal framework that would allow its followers to make a sincere affirmation of liberal citizenship. Do Not In The Essay. This survey provides empirical support for the view that mosques across America, as institutional and social settings for mosque-going Muslims, are at least resistant to romeo act 3 1 summary, social cooperation with non-Muslims.

Indeed, the overwhelming majority of on Mormon History and Joseph Smith mosques surveyed promoted literature supportive of violent jihad and a significant number invited speakers known to have promoted violent jihad and other behaviors that are inconsistent with a reasonable construct of liberal citizenship. This survey suggests that, first and scene, foremost, Muslim community leaders must take a more active role in educating their own faith community about the dangers associated with providing a safe haven for violent literature and with, its promotionwhether that safe haven is the mosque or the social club. These results also suggest that researchers and counterterrorist specialists should pay closer attention to the use and exploitation of classic Islamic legal doctrine and romeo scene 1 summary, jurisprudence for Man Essay recruiting and generating a commitment to violence against and juliet act 3 scene 1 summary, the perceived enemies of Islam. Finally, these findings should engender at least an interest among researchers to begin to study carefully Muslim attitudes toward citizenship and violence but one that differentiates between those who are Shari'a-adherent and those who are not. And, among Shari'a adherents, this future survey data must be sensitive to the distinction between traditionalism, orthodoxy, and Salafism, along with the more obvious sect distinctions, such as between Sunnis and Shiites. Non-Shari'a-adherent communal prayer occurs when men and Do Not Trap of Little Essay, women are not segregated during the prayer service and the genders mix. Non-Shari'a-adherent alignment of romeo 1 summary men's prayer lines occurs when there is no observable attention paid to strict alignment of the men's prayer lines. A non-Sunna style beard is either limited to a chin-beard or if the imam or lay leader wears no beard at all. Non-Shari'a adherent behavior is that the problems utilitarianism, imam or lay leader did not wear a religious head covering.

Non-Shari'a-adherent garb is Western-style clothing such as modern-style dress or casual pants and shirt. Wearing the watch on romeo scene 1 summary, the left wrist or not wearing a watch at all. Non-Shari'a-adherent behavior is for an adult male worshiper to Essay of Infectious, have no beard. Non-Shari'a-adherent behavior is for an adult male to not wear a religious hat. Non-Shari'a-adherent behavior is to wear Western-style clothing such as pants not rolled up above the ankles.

Non-Shari'a-adherent behavior is to wear the modern hijab (a scarf that does not completely cover the hair) or to not wear any hair covering. Non-Shari'a-adherent behavior is to not wear the hijab. Non-Shari'a-adherent behavior is to not wear a religious head covering. If the romeo and juliet act 3 scene, surveyor found the Riyadh as-Salaheen , works by Qutb or Mawdudi, or similar materials, then the mosque was categorized as containing severe-rated materials. If the surveyor found no violence-positive materials or if the violence-positive materials constituted less than 10% of all available materials, then the in the Trap of Little Essay, mosque was categorized as containing no materials. If the imam or lay leader recommended studying any of the materials mentioned above except the and juliet scene 1 summary, Qur'an and/or Sunna, then the Essay on Mormon History Smith, imam or lay leader was recorded as having recommended the study of texts promoting the rated material. [1] According to Islamic jurisprudence, Shari'a adherence can be measured across several normative axes, such as obligatory-prohibited, recommended-discouraged, and simply permissible.

In theory, every act of a Shari'a-adherent Muslim falls within one of the romeo scene 1 summary, normative categoriesthat is, there is no behavior outside of Shari'a. For purposes of this survey, the Do Not Fall in the Trap of Little, authors have chosen, except where indicated by notation, the romeo and juliet scene, obligatory-prohibited and Essay Decline Diseases, the recommended-discouraged or recommended-permissible axes, which we have demarcated Shari'a-adherent/non- Shari'a-adherent, respectively. [2] If a mosque, on the basis of materials observed by romeo and juliet act 3 scene, the surveyor, was recorded as having: (a) promoted violent jihad; (b) promoted joining a terrorist organization; (c) promoted financial support of problems utilitarianism terror; (d) collected money openly at the mosque for a known terrorist organization; (e) promoted establishing the Caliphate in the U.S.; (f) praised terror against the West; (g) distributed memorabilia featuring jihadists or terrorist organizations; or (h) invited imams or preachers who are known to have promoted violent jihad, then the materials that the surveyor relied on to record the presence of this material were subject to a secondary review by romeo 1 summary, a committee of three subject-matter experts. This secondary review was collected and reviewed by the experts evaluating the materials independently of with one another. Romeo Act 3 Scene 1 Summary. A consensus view of two of the three experts was required to confirm the surveyor's observation. In 63 percent of the for Body A Longitudinal Investigation, cases, the materials were so explicit in their promotion, praise, or support for act 3 1 summary the above behaviors that the committee's decision was unanimous. In no instance was there not a consensus and Jeffs: A Wanted Man Essay, agreement with the surveyor's observation. [3] The different legal schools vary on and juliet act 3 1 summary, whether a beard is obligatory or preferable; they also differ on whether the beard for purposes of Essay fiqh is only the chin hairs or also the lateral hairs of the sideburns and romeo act 3 scene, cheeks; and they differ on the minimum required length before trimming is permitted.

The majority view, taking into account all schools and the Salafist opinions, is that a full beard is Sunna (following the Essay on The Decline of Infectious Diseases, behavior of Muhammad) and if not obligatory, preferable. For purposes of this survey, the scene 1 summary, full beard, trimmed or not, was considered Shari'a-adherent and a chin beard or no beard, was considered as non-Sunna, and in the survey's lexicon, non-adherent. [4] While wearing a watch on the right hand is on Mormon not strictly speaking a Shari'a requirement, during the preparation of the methodology of romeo scene 1 summary this survey, the authors identified literature at several mosques attended by Salafists advocating the wearing of a watch on the right hand for two reasons: not to Do Not in the of Little Sleep, wear jewelry on the left hand to follow the mode of dress of Muhammad, who, based upon certain Sunna, did not wear jewelry on his left hand; and to avoid dressing in romeo, the way of non-Muslims. The authors decided to add this observation to Man Essay, determine whether this behavior translated into romeo and juliet 1 summary observance by the more fundamentalist Salafists. They also observed that the 12 imams who wore the watch on the right hand were right handed. [5] All of the Factors Dissatisfaction in Adolescent A Longitudinal, materials characterized from this point to the end of the romeo and juliet act 3 scene 1 summary, survey were dated or produced prior to September 11, 2001 but were still available or sold by the mosque in prominent fashion. Sampling: The survey analyzed data collected from a random sample of 100 mosques. This sample size provided sufficient statistical power to Do Not Fall in the Trap Essay, find a statistically significant association between most of the selected Shari'a-adherent behaviors and violence-positive variables. Most Shari'a adherence and violence-positive variables exhibited a strong correlation while some exhibited a weak or no correlation.

A sample size of 100 mosques also allowed the survey to extrapolate to and juliet scene, all mosques in the United States at a 95 percent confidence interval with a margin of error of Girls: +/-9.6 percent. The survey was developed by using state-by-state estimates of the Muslim population extracted from the only extant such survey.[30] This was then used to create a listing of all states whose Muslim population represented at and juliet scene, least 1 percent of the estimated total United States Muslim population. Fourteen states and the District of Columbia (15 randomly selected states) were randomly selected from the Factors for Body A Longitudinal, final listing to accommodate limits on physical logistics and personnel resources for and juliet scene 1 summary the actual survey. For each of the fourteen states and D.C., cities with the highest estimated concentrations of Muslims were identified, and mosques within those areas were eventually selected. With. The survey combined the data on 1,209 mosques listed in The Mosque in America: A National Portrait[31] with the data on the 1,659 mosques obtained online from Harvard's Pluralism Project,[32] with duplicates eliminated. Mosques were excluded from the list if there were indications that they were no longer operating, with a final site list yielding a total of 1,401 potential mosques for the survey. The dates and prayer times for romeo and juliet scene 1 summary visiting mosques were also randomly selected. Jeffs: A Wanted Man Essay. If a mosque was found to be closed, abandoned, or not at the address listed, then the next mosque that appeared on the randomized list for act 3 scene 1 summary that city was visited.

When the with utilitarianism, dominant language of the subject mosque was determined to be other than English, such as Arabic, Urdu, or Farsi, the surveyor who visited the romeo act 3 scene, mosque was fluent in that language. Each mosque was visited twice, once between May 18, 2007, and December 4, 2008 (Survey Period), and goals preamble, then again between May 10, 2009, and May 30, 2010 (Audit Period). 10 Resume Tips From A Legal Recruiter. Ed. note : This is the latest installment in a series of posts on lateral partner moves from Lateral Links team of scene 1 summary, expert contributors. Abby Gordon is a Director with Lateral Links New York office. Risk In Adolescent Investigation. Abby works with attorney candidates on law firm and in-house searches, primarily in New York, Boston, and Europe. Prior to joining Lateral Link, Abby spent seven years as a corporate associate with Cleary Gottlieb, focusing on capital markets transactions for Latin American clients in and juliet act 3 New York and for the last five years for European clients in Paris. A native of Warren Jeffs: A Wanted Man Essay, Boston, Abby holds a J.D., cum laude, from scene 1 summary Georgetown University Law Center and Factors for Body Dissatisfaction in Adolescent A Longitudinal, a B.A. in government and romance languages, magna cum laude, from Dartmouth College. Abby also worked with the International Rescue Committee as a Fulbright Scholar in Madrid, Spain.

She is a member of the New York Bar and is fluent in French and Spanish (and dabbles in 1 summary Portuguese and Italian). As a legal recruiter, I review numerous resumes each week in an effort to assist my candidates with the substance and presentation of their one-page life summaries. Smith. Here are ten tips based on the most common problems I see and questions I am asked: 1. Romeo And Juliet Act 3 1 Summary. Assume no one will read your resume word-for-word. Picture your interviewer pulling your resume off the printer and reading only what he can in the time it takes to walk back to his office. You need to make the most important stuff jump off the page. Use bold. Use bullet points. Use headings. Give some thought to the format that will convey the problems with, necessary information in the most logical way. And Juliet. 2. Warren Jeffs: A Wanted. Be concise and romeo and juliet scene 1 summary, make every word count.

This is related to Tip #1. You want the most important stuff to jump off the page, but every word on your resume should serve the purpose of showing that you are the problems, best candidate for the specific job. Its just one page. 3. Romeo And Juliet Act 3 Scene 1 Summary. Tailor your resume to the specific job. Keep in Essay History Smith the forefront of your mind that you are applying for a legal job. Do not view updating your resume as merely adding to the same document you first created 20 years ago. Romeo And Juliet Act 3 1 Summary. Delete information that is no longer relevant #8212; remember, every last word should serve the purpose of Warren Man Essay, getting you this job. If you are applying to 10 general litigation openings, one version may be just fine. But if you are applying to some general litigation spots and some patent litigation spots, you may want to have two versions of your resume, with each tailored to the specific opening or category of romeo 1 summary, opening. 4. Be sure you can talk intelligently about every last thing you include on your resume. If you can no longer remember the on Mormon History and Joseph, main argument of romeo and juliet act 3 scene, your senior thesis from college, delete it from problems with your resume or refresh your memory before any interviews.

You also must be prepared to talk about the any legal matters you claim to have worked on, including about the underlying legal issues. 5. When describing your legal experience, give concrete examples . Instead of merely asserting that you are a capital markets lawyer, note that you Drafted the underwriting agreement as lead associate representing the underwriters in act 3 1 summary the offering of problems with utilitarianism, $300 million in floating rate notes by a large U.S. manufacturing company. Even if you have a separate representative matters sheet, it may be helpful to romeo and juliet scene 1 summary, include a few bullets points showing this experience in your actual resume as well. And remember from Tip #2, every word counts. Dont use neutral words where a more positive word could convey more meaning. For example, which is more powerful, stating that you worked on a project or that you successfully implemented a project?

6. Be sure all information is up-to-date. Jeffs: A Wanted. If you are no longer on a committee, delete it from your resume or indicate the proper dates. Change the verbs (represent, draft, negotiate) from the descriptions of your prior jobs to romeo and juliet, the past tense (represented, drafted, negotiated). Problems Utilitarianism. No longer fluent in French? Be accurate in the assessment of and juliet, your language ability as of today, not as of mid-way through your junior year abroad. 7. Additional Information: Space is a commodity, but you should still make room for two or three lines that show you are a human being and not just a robot. Include a few interests (but be sure they are real interests of problems, yours and scene 1 summary, not aspirational hobbies). Maybe you and one of the problems utilitarianism, interviewers will find you have a hobby in common.

If nothing else, this fluff gives interviewers some material for a few softball questions to break the ice or end the interview on a lighter note. Aside from true interests/hobbies, include language abilities, bar admissions, and romeo and juliet scene, memberships/affiliations so long as you are an active and not just passive participant in these organizations. With Utilitarianism. Remember the essential test: Can you talk intelligently about it if asked? If someone asks about romeo act 3 scene, your membership in Essay on The Decline an alumni network, will you state proudly that you assisted in act 3 raising $500,000 in alumni contributions for a scholarship fund or will you cower in your chair and confess that you are on the e-mail list for the committee but have yet to attend a meeting? 8. Goals. Education first or work experience first? This is a common question.

Remember Tip #1 #8212; you want the most important stuff to jump off the and juliet act 3 1 summary, page. So if you went to a top law school, you may want to list education first. If your law school was not as highly ranked but you somehow landed a job at Wachtell, list work experience first. In the case of a tie, Id go with work experience first. 9. The squint test : It seems a bit unsophisticated but it works. And Joseph Smith. Tape your resume to a wall about 10 feet away or just hold it far out in front of you and squint.

Does the balance of black and white on the page make your eyes happy? Is there much too much dense text? Or way too much white space? If youve ever strung lights on romeo and juliet a Christmas tree, its the problems with, same principle. Squint and then follow your instincts. 10.

Proofread your resume carefully. Romeo Act 3. Then proofread it again. Then ask a friend to proofread it. And another friend. And your legal recruiter. Then proofread it again. Nothing screams Dont hire me! like a glaring typo or spelling mistake. 10?.

Heres a freebie. Its not the most important tip unless well if it is, you know who you are. You know that photo of problems with utilitarianism, you in the Bahamas in and juliet act 3 scene 1 summary your bikini? Shirtless? You remember how you uploaded it to your Google profile? And now you list your Gmail address on your resume? Well guess what When I am e-mailing you at your Gmail address, yes, I can see that photo of problems with utilitarianism, you in the right-hand sidebar on my screen. If I can see it, so can the recruiting coordinator and so can the partner at romeo act 3 1 summary, the firm where youre interviewing.

Oh, and one more thing: your Twitter feed will also now show up on the right-hand sidebar. Im not asking you to stop using social media. But if you are indiscriminate about with, your tweets, think about act 3, setting up a separate e-mail address for the job search process. There is not just one right way of designing a resume. Warren. But there are wrong ways. Look at models but dont just copy someone elses.

This singular piece of paper is your key to getting your foot in the door in and juliet act 3 the next step of your career or not. Its worth spending a few extra hours getting it right. Act III: Scene 1 - Cliffs Notes

Framing Effects in Younger and Older Adults. A growing literature on decision making in romeo 1 summary, older adults suggests that they are more likely to Decline of Infectious Diseases use heuristic processing than are younger adults. We assessed this tendency in the context of a framing effect, a decision-making phenomenon whereby the language used to describe options greatly influences the decision maker#x02019;s choice. We compared decision making under a standard (#x0201c;heuristic#x0201d;) condition and also under a #x0201c;justification#x0201d; condition known to reduce reliance on heuristics. In the standard condition, older adults were more susceptible than younger adults to romeo act 3 1 summary framing but the two groups did not differ when participants were asked to provide a justification. Problems With? Thus, although older adults may spontaneously rely more on romeo and juliet 1 summary heuristic processing than younger adults, they can be induced to take a more systematic approach to decision making. THE term framing effect refers to a phenomenon whereby the choices people make are systematically altered by utilitarianism the language used in and juliet scene, the formulation of on The of Infectious options. For example, in the well-known Asian disease task (Tversky #x00026; Kahneman, 1981), participants in the so-called positive frame condition make a treatment choice based on a description of lives saved (e.g., 200 out of a total of 600 people will be saved); by contrast, in the so-called negative frame condition, participants make a treatment choice based on a description of lives lost (e.g., 400 out of a total of 600 people will die). Despite the romeo and juliet scene identical underlying basis of the two versions of the problem, people make different choices: They are more likely to be risk averse (i.e., to move away from a risky option) when questions are framed as gains (i.e., positively) and more risk seeking (i.e., to in the Trap of Little Sleep move toward a risky option) when questions are framed as losses (i.e., negatively). The literature on these and other framing-effect problems is extensive (for reviews, see Levin, Schneider, #x00026; Gaeth, 1998; also see K#x000fc;hberger, 1998). However, the research has mainly used college students as participants and the performance of and juliet act 3 scene 1 summary older adults has rarely been the Essay on The Decline of Infectious central focus of the and juliet scene research.

Although older adults were included in some studies with professionals, experts, and patients (e.g., Loke #x00026; Tan, 1992; McNeil, Pauker, Sox, #x00026; Tversky, 1982; Roszkowski #x00026; Snelbecker, 1990), the age of the problems with samples in romeo and juliet act 3, these studies was also confounded with other characteristics such as expertise and some medical conditions. Previously, we (Kim #x00026; Hasher, 2005) demonstrated superior performance by older adults in decision making using attraction-effect tasks, suggesting that older adults can, under some circumstances, show performance better than that of younger adults, perhaps because they have greater life experience in decision making (e.g., Hertwig, Barron, Weber, #x00026; Erev, 2004). In the current study, we were also interested in examining whether older adults can perform better than younger adults in decision making in the context of a framing effect. As in our previous study, it is conceivable that older adults are less likely to show framing effects than younger adults because they have greater life experience in decision making. However, an alternative hypothesis is also possible. In the framing-effect literature, there is on Mormon History, some evidence that even people with experience or expertise are not immune to scene framing effects (e.g., Loke #x00026; Tan, 1992; Roszkowski #x00026; Snelbecker, 1990). Further, a number of explanations have been proposed for Essay and Joseph Smith framing effects (e.g., see K#x000fc;hberger, 1997, for romeo 1 summary a review); there has been some agreement that, in many instances, #x0201c;framing#x0201d; is the product of heuristic information processing (e.g., McElroy #x00026; Seta, 2003). This proposal is Do Not Fall Trap of Little Sleep Essay, strengthened by demonstrations that framing effects can be reduced when circumstances press for detailed processing, for example, when participants must provide a rationale for their selections (e.g., Sieck #x00026; Yates, 1997; Takemura, 1993). Romeo Act 3 Scene 1 Summary? Thus, because there is evidence that older adults tend to rely on heuristic processing more than younger adults (e.g., Johnson, 1990), it is conceivable that older adults are more likely to show framing effects.

Verbal framing could be a case in which greater life experience at Essay on The Decline, making decisions does not benefit older adults. If it is such a case, then our question becomes whether asking for and juliet act 3 scene 1 summary a rationale for problems utilitarianism a decision can increase reliance on romeo act 3 detailed processing and thus make it possible for goals older adults to romeo act 3 make decisions that are similar to those of younger adults. One hundred and Essay Decline, eighty-six undergraduate students (aged 17 to 28 years) from the romeo and juliet University of Toronto and 186 senior citizens (aged 58 to for Body in Adolescent 78 years) from the and juliet Toronto area participated in this study. Older adults had significantly higher vocabulary scores ( M = 29.43, SD = 9.27), as assessed by the Extended Range Vocabulary Test (ERVT), version 3 (Educational Testing Service, 1976), than younger adults ( M = 19.39, SD = 7.04), t (368) = 11.75. With? Younger adults received credit for an introductory psychology course and older adults received $10 for their participation. We used two problems, each with a positive and act 3 scene, negative frame. We adopted one problem, the #x0201c;fatal disease#x0201d; problem, from Wang, Simons, and Br#x000e9;dart (2001). Essay On The Decline? We did not use the well-known Asian disease problem in this study because of the demographic characteristics in the Greater Toronto area, in romeo act 3 scene, which a considerable portion of the with utilitarianism population is Asian.

We adopted the romeo act 3 1 summary other problem, the Risk A Longitudinal Investigation #x0201c;cancer treatment#x0201d; problem, from and juliet scene 1 summary, McNeil and colleagues (1982; see Appendix). Note that, for both problems, the option labeled as B is the Do Not Fall in the Essay one that previous work shows is chosen reliably more in the negative frame than in act 3, the positive frame. The experiment was a 2 (Age: young and old) #x000d7; 2 (Frame: positive and Girls: A Longitudinal Investigation, negative) #x000d7; 2 (Justification: with and without justification) between-subjects design. Act 3 Scene 1 Summary? There were 53 participants in Decline of Infectious Diseases, each without-justification group and 40 in and juliet act 3 scene 1 summary, each with-justification group. Participants in the with-justification condition were asked to goals of the preamble provide a rationale in act 3 scene 1 summary, writing for their choice prior to actually indicating their choice (Sieck #x00026; Yates, 1997).

Participants who were in the without-justification condition were not asked to Essay Smith provide a rational for their choice. Each participant received both problems in a counterbalanced order in either their positive or negative frame. Because research has shown that a reliance on analytic strategies is more likely at romeo and juliet 1 summary, optimal times of day whereas a reliance on heuristic strategies is more likely at nonoptimal times (e.g., Bodenhausen, 1990), and because optimal times are different for younger and older adults (e.g., Yoon, May, #x00026; Hasher, 1999), we tested at normatively optimal times for each group, that is, in the morning for older adults and in Factors Dissatisfaction in Adolescent Girls: A Longitudinal Investigation, the afternoon for younger adults. Act 3? Our goal was to increase the likelihood that analytic strategies would be used by both groups in on The, the standard condition. For Each Problem: Problem-by-Problem Analysis. The dependent variable was the act 3 proportion of Do Not Fall Trap of Little younger and older adults selecting Option B in each problem (see Table 1 ). Scene? We used a chi-square test to assess whether the choice proportions were significantly different across the Warren A Wanted Man Essay two frames (especially, whether the choice proportion is significantly higher in the negative frame than in the positive frame), indicating the presence of a framing effect. In the without-justification condition, younger adults did not show a reliable framing effect in the fatal disease problem, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 106) = 0.99, and they showed a marginal effect in the cancer treatment problem, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 106) = 3.13, p = .08. (The effect size of the original Asian disease problem is actually exceptionally large; its effect size was categorized as an romeo and juliet act 3, outlier in the meta-analysis of K#x000fc;hberger, 1998. According to him, an average effect size of Asian disease types of problems, i.e., problems with risk manipulation by a reference point, is around medium.

To give room for an effect to go up or down with younger and goals of the preamble, older participants, we selected problems with effect sizes slightly lower than medium in the current study. Perhaps this is the reason why we did not find framing effects in younger adults in each problem.) Older adults, by contrast, showed a significant framing effect for act 3 both the Jeffs: A Wanted Man Essay fatal disease problem, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 106) 2 (1, N = 9.95, p #x0003c; .01, and the cancer treatment problem, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 106) = 16.06, p #x0003c; .01. In the with-justification condition, younger adults did not show a framing effect for either the problem of fatal disease, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 80) = 0.25, or of cancer treatment, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 80) = 1.26. Similarly, older adults did not show a framing effect = for either the scene 1 summary fatal disease problem, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 80) = 1.32, or the cancer treatment problem, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 80) = 1.35. Across Problems: Pooled Data Analysis. We combined the choice data from the problems two problems to enable a powerful test of our hypotheses. (In order to examine the independence of participants#x02019; responses across two problems, we used McNemar#x02019;s test. McNemar#x02019;s test is a test used to examine whether repeated categorical responses in two different conditions are independent of each other. The test results showed that responses or choices are independent, i.e., significantly different, from each other across the scene two problems for younger and older adults, respectively, in each justification condition.

Thus, these results should ensure that our collapsing of data across problems does not violate the responseindependence assumption of logistic regression.) We analyzed these pooled data by using logistic regression to examine main effects and interactions among three independent variables: frame (positive and utilitarianism, negative), age (young and old) and justification (with and act 3, without justification). First, we carried out model selection by with utilitarianism using stepwise and backward selection methods to find a logistic regression model that best fits the data (e.g., SAS Institute, 1989). The final model we selected (Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit #x003c7; 2 = 1.58, p = .95, df = 6) excluded the three-way interaction (Age #x000d7; Justification #x000d7; Frame) and the one two-way interaction (Age #x000d7; Justification), and it included only three main effects (frame, age, and justification) and two two-way interactions (Age #x000d7; Frame and Justification #x000d7; Frame). Of these five parameters in 1 summary, the final model, three (one main effect and Jeffs:, two interactions) were statistically significant. Specifically, the romeo and juliet act 3 scene 1 summary main effect of frame was significant, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 744) = 6.84, p #x0003c; .01, indicating an overall framing effect. This effect, however, was qualified by problems with two hypothesized interactions#x02014;Age #x000d7; Frame, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 744) = 4.66, p #x0003c; .05, and Justification #x000d7; Frame, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 744) = 4.53, p #x0003c; .05. The Age #x000d7; Frame interaction indicates that participants#x02019; age had an effect on the magnitude of the framing effect. To probe this further, we performed a separate logistic regression analysis for each age group. The main effect of frame was significant only for older adults, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 372) = 22.29, p #x0003c; .01, but not for and juliet act 3 1 summary younger adults, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 372) = 3.13, p = .08, suggesting that older adults were more = vulnerable = to= this framing effect than younger adults.

The Justification #x000d7; Frame interaction indicates that the justification manipulation had an History and Joseph Smith, effect on romeo and juliet act 3 the magnitude of the framing effect. Risk Factors For Body Dissatisfaction Girls: A Longitudinal? Separate analyses that we performed for each justification condition revealed a significant main effect of and juliet act 3 1 summary frame only for Jeffs: Man Essay the without-justification condition, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 424) = 23.14, p #x0003c; .01, but not for the with-justification condition, #x003c7; 2 (1, N = 320) = 2.12. These results suggest that the justification manipulation significantly reduced the framing effect for romeo and juliet scene both younger and older adults. In the current study we examined whether there are age differences in vulnerability to a framing effect. Faced with a problem couched in terms of the number of people who will die as a result of two treatments#x02014;the classic negative frame#x02014; older adults were more risk seeking than younger adults and, by contrast, when given the Warren Jeffs: A Wanted Man Essay identical problem couched in terms of the number of scene 1 summary people who will live#x02014;the positive frame#x02014;older adults were more risk averse than younger adults. We observed a very similar pattern in Essay on Mormon and Joseph Smith, the second problem, with older adults in this instance proving more likely to focus on short-term survival in the negative frame and on act 3 scene long-term survival in on The of Infectious Diseases, the positive frame. In other words, older adults#x02019; decisions were more influenced by the language frame, at least for problems such as those used here, both of romeo scene 1 summary which may well have an of the, emotional context.

Furthermore, as we expected on and juliet 1 summary the basis of earlier studies asking younger participants to provide a rationale for problems with their decisions (e.g., Sieck #x00026; Yates, 1997; Takemura, 1993), the justification manipulation significantly reduced the present framing effect for both younger and older adults. Romeo And Juliet Act 3? Clearly, older adults can use analytic processes that enable them to base their decisions on a problem#x02019;s deeper structure, rather than on its superficial language. The current data are consistent with the resource allocation hypothesis proposed by Hess, Rosenberg, and Waters (2001). Jeffs: A Wanted? According to this hypothesis, because older adults have limited cognitive resources, they tend to and juliet act 3 scene rely on heuristic information processing in order to conserve their mental energy for important tasks. As a result, Hess and colleagues argued that older adults can perform as well as younger adults in Risk Factors in Adolescent A Longitudinal, a relatively low resource-demanding task when they are highly motivated to process information systematically.

Our data fit with this explanation, if this decision situation can be thought of as one making a low demand, in that older adults were more likely to show framing effects than younger adults because they tended to and juliet scene 1 summary rely on Warren Jeffs: Man Essay heuristic information processing more than younger adults, but their performance improved up to the level of younger adults when they were encouraged to process information systematically. Our current findings have important practical implications for older adults#x02019; decision making, especially in medical decision domains. This is a domain full of scene risky decisions that have to be made. Thus, knowing that older adults are more vulnerable than younger adults to how decision alternatives are verbally presented (framed), medical practitioners may need to pay greater attention to how they present medical information and Fall, treatment options when they communicate with elderly patients. 1 Summary? However, our current finding that older adults#x02019; heightened susceptibility to problems utilitarianism verbal framing can be ameliorated by act 3 a simple justification manipulation suggests that a relatively easy, everyday solution may be available to older adults#x02014;along with others#x02014;to reduce some biases in choice.
